What happened

The record, in order.

Generation Investment Management LLP was incorporated in England on 5 April 2004 (Companies House number OC307600) as "a & d research and capital management LLP" and renamed on 20 August 2004. Al Gore is its chairman and David Blood, who was chief executive of Goldman Sachs Asset Management from 1999 to 2003, a co-founder. The UK financial regulator has authorised the firm since 26 October 2004 (reference 402126), and its US adviser, Generation Investment Management US LLP, has been registered with the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) since 22 October 2004. The firm manages money for pension funds, universities, government bodies and wealthy families, buying listed shares and running growth-equity, private-equity and climate funds, among them Just Climate, set up in 2021. The UK accounts for 2025 give an average of 47 members and 145 employees. The 2026 SEC filings show Blood, Gore, Ferguson, Nogales and Kukrika each holding 5% to under 10% of the UK LLP, and the brochure says no partner holds 25% or more; the accounts for 2005 to 2014 said Blood held a majority interest in the capital while the LLP was controlled jointly by its members.

The firm is paid by management and performance fees. Its May 2026 SEC brochure gives the Global Equity fund a management fee of 0.80% a year, falling to 0.70% after five years, 0.60% after ten and 0.50% after fifteen; the base fee was 1.00% before 1 July 2024. The performance fee is 20% of outperformance against a benchmark, calculated over rolling three-year periods with a high-water mark, and the brochure says it can be received even when the client has a net loss over the period. Growth-equity and private-equity funds charge 1.0% to 1.75% of commitments depending on fund and investor class, plus 20% carried interest above an 8% preferred return; in Sustainable Private Equity Fund II, 5 of the 20 carry points depend on impact targets. The UK group's turnover rose from £126.056 million in 2015 to £530.983 million in 2021, of which £330.710 million was performance fees, and was £179.376 million in 2025, of which £2.963 million was performance fees. Profit available for division among members was £431.688 million in 2021 and £83.967 million in 2025. The largest single member's entitlement was £84.7 million in 2021 and £6.5 million in 2025; the accounts identified that member as the Senior Partner for 2009 to 2011 and do not name the member afterwards.

The firm reports assets of more than $39 billion at the end of 2021, about $30 billion at the end of 2022, $30.0 billion at the end of 2025 and $22.9 billion in June 2026. Its investor letters give Global Equity net returns of 10.9% a year since inception to 30 June 2026 against 9.1% for the MSCI World index, and report underperformance in 2011, 2022, 2024 and 2025. The value of its US-listed holdings, reported in SEC 13F filings, was $24.33 billion at the end of 2021 and $10.29 billion in the second quarter of 2026, with Danaher, Amazon and Microsoft the largest. Across the 193 issuers held between 2006 and 2026, none was an oil and gas, coal, mining, airline or agrochemical company; the brochure lists only two formal exclusions, tobacco (over 15% of revenue) and cluster munitions and anti-personnel mines, and says the firm buys only companies on its own Focus List. In the firm's own report, Amazon was the largest emitter in the 2024 portfolio, with 68.8 million tonnes, or 23% of the portfolio total. Just Climate's first fund (CAF I) closed on 8 June 2023 at $1.5 billion against a $1 billion target, with a performance fee tied entirely to greenhouse-gas abatement goals. Two Just Climate investees, listed on its portfolio page, ran into difficulty: Ascend Elements filed for Chapter 11 on 9 April 2026 and a plan of liquidation was confirmed on 17 August 2026, and Stegra, a green-steel company, was refinanced in a €1.4 billion round after which Stegra Holding AB held more than 90%.

The Generation Foundation (charity 1113061), whose sole member is the LLP, is funded by donations that its accounts describe as "equivalent to an annual allocation of distributable profit"; the firm's stewardship report says partners give 5% of their profit entitlement. The Foundation received donations of £5.050538 million in 2022, £4.909514 million in 2023, £5.558632 million in 2024 and £2.815110 million in 2025, and spent £11.406713 million, £5.945608 million, £11.089321 million and £8.229656 million in those years; its funds at the end of 2025 were £27.160102 million. Most grants found went to finance, disclosure and policy bodies, among them the IFRS Foundation (£1,488,900 in 2024), the Principles for Responsible Investment (£500,000 in 2018 and £2,000,000 in 2020), IIGCC (£1,500,000 in 2024 and £1,186,063 in 2025) and WattTime, the secretariat of Climate TRACE (£2,187,000 in 2025). Grants to conservation bodies found for 2013 to 2025 were to Conservation International (£19,283 in 2013, £150,000 in 2017 for the Lamu Blue Carbon Finance project, £988,268 in 2020), the Australian Wildlife Conservancy and the Australian Conservation Foundation (£25,000 each in 2017), the Zoological Society of London (£25,000 in 2014) and Rainforest Alliance (£17,000 in 2016). No spending by the firm on land or habitat conservation was found. The firm buys offset credits for its own footprint (bio-oil carbon capture in the US, mangrove restoration in Pakistan, peatland preservation in Indonesia, biochar in Finland) and does not disclose their tonnes or cost.

Several partners hold seats at conservation and standard-setting bodies. David Blood was listed as a director of The Nature Conservancy (TNC) on its Form 990s for 2012 to 2015 and part of 2016, joined the board of the World Resources Institute (WRI) in October 2016 and is now its chair, and was an initial member of the Task Force on Climate-related Financial Disclosures. Mark Ferguson has been on the Conservation International (CI) board since the 2015 tax year, and in August 2021 lent CI $250,000 for the Maasai Mara conservancies; the balance was $97,122 in the 2024 tax year. Miguel Nogales is a trustee of Fauna & Flora (vice chair from September 2025), John Bernstein sits on TNC's global board, and Colin le Duc was on the board of Ocean Conservancy until March 2025. The Foundation's 2020 accounts link its £988,268 grant to CI with Ferguson's board seat. Form 990 Schedule L entries for TNC and WRI show no Generation-related transactions, and no endowment managed by Generation was found at any conservation body checked. Both Form ADV filings dated 4 May 2026 answer every disciplinary question "No", and the FCA register shows no disciplinary history or final notice. The brochure discloses conflicts of interest, including that the incentive fee can be received in a period of net loss. At a House hearing on 24 April 2009, Representative Marsha Blackburn asked Gore whether he would personally benefit from cap-and-trade legislation, and Gore replied that every penny he had made had gone to a nonprofit.

  • Generation's Climate Solutions Fund I invested in Kleiner's KPCB Green Growth Fund, and the two firms have a carried-interest sharing agreement on that investment; the brochure states that the Chairman of Generation is a partner of and equity investor in Kleiner Perkins.
  • Department of Energy testimony: a $529 million loan to Fisker Automotive closed on 22 April 2010, $192 million was disbursed and disbursements stopped in June 2011.

  • Press estimates of wealth: Bloomberg Businessweek (May 2013) put Gore's wealth at just under $200 million, including about $70 million from the sale of Current TV, about $30 million from Apple share sales and about $45 million in Apple shares; on leaving office in 2001 he listed assets under $2 million.
  • Just Climate's portfolio page lists Stegra, Meva Energy, ABB E-mobility, Infinitum, Ascend Elements, Continuum Green Energy, Terra CO2, NatureMetrics, GreenLight Biosciences, AgroStar, Tropic, Zanskar, Afresh, Corvus Energy and Twenty Four Seven Data Centers.
  • Ascend Elements filed Chapter 11 on 9 April 2026 in the Southern District of Texas (cases 26-90440 and 26-90439). The ownership statement lists JC Bluegrass (Invest) SCSp, a Luxembourg entity, at 10.5%; the filing does not state its link to Just Climate.
  • A plan of liquidation for Ascend Elements was confirmed on 17 August 2026 and took effect on 8 September 2026, with a trust set up to pay unsecured creditors.
  • Press reported that Ascend Elements returned a $164 million Department of Energy grant in February 2025 and that the Department cancelled a $316 million grant in October 2025.
  • Stegra announced on 24 June 2026 a €1.4 billion financing round led by Wallenberg Investments; Stegra Holding AB holds more than 90%, Just Climate remains an investor and its chief investment officer stays on the board.
