What happened

The record, in order.

The Nature Conservancy (TNC) announced a coral reef insurance policy for Hawaii on 20-21 November 2022. TNC was the policyholder and Munich Re the insurer; Willis Towers Watson (WTW) was the broker. The limit was up to US$2m, the premium US$110,000, the trigger winds of 50 knots, and the term ran to the end of 2023. The premium was funded by grants from the Bank of America Charitable Foundation and the Howden Group Foundation.

In 2024 TNC renewed the policy. According to Insurance Journal, TNC selected an insurance company of the Munich Re Group from seven bids, with WTW as broker. Civil Beat reported a 2024 premium of $106k, paid by donors and the Howden Foundation, and that more ocean area was covered. TNC said on 15 April 2025 that it had renewed the policy for 2025 with Munich Re Group.

The policy's terms were a 50-knot trigger, a minimum payout of $200k, $1m per storm and $2m per year. Hurricane Lala triggered it for the first time in August 2026, with winds of 65 knots. The reported minimum payout was $200,000; the final amount was not confirmed in the sources reviewed.

The policy is wind-triggered. Swiss Re's July 2026 presentation to the Asian Development Bank described existing Hawaii, Quintana Roo and MAR Fund policies as wind-triggered only; no document reviewed states an explicit bleaching exclusion. NOAA stated on 2 June 2026 that from early 2023 to mid-2025 bleaching-level heat stress affected 84% of the world's coral reef area; that figure is heat-stress exposure, not the share of reefs that bleached or died.

Did the harm stop?

Not applicable in the record: the policy pays after a wind event and does not itself prevent harm to the reef.

Who paid?

Donors paid the documented premiums (the Bank of America Charitable Foundation, the Howden Group Foundation and other donors); the insurer, a Munich Re Group company, was to pay on a trigger and reportedly did so in August 2026.
