What happened

The record, in order.

Kenya introduced a logging ban in 2018, with a stated target of 10% tree cover. In July 2023 President William Ruto lifted the ban. A court set that decision aside in October 2023; Africanews reported it as the court halting the lifting of the logging ban.

On 13 November 2023 the government held a national tree-planting day with a target of 100 million seedlings in one day, within a goal of planting 15 billion trees by 2032. the sources reviewed found no record of the number actually planted.

In 2024 Eastleigh Voice published an article headlined 'Six million eucalyptus trees in six months', with KEFRI given as the source. the sources reviewed's summary records the figure as six million eucalyptus trees felled in the first half of 2024.

The government gives forest cover as 8.83% and tree cover as 12.13%. Critics put cover at 6 to 7%, and FAO at about 6.7%. In the Mau Forest, tree cover fell by 19% (533 km2) between 2001 and 2022.
