What happened
1t.org was launched in 2020 as the World Economic Forum's platform to mobilise commitments to "conserve, restore and grow one trillion trees by 2030", according to its legacy page, in support of the UN Decade of Ecosystem Restoration. A Salesforce release of 28 October 2021 said that Marc and Lynne Benioff gave initial funding to establish 1t.org in January 2020 and announced a US$100 million Benioff TIME Tree Fund that "aims to accelerate the global reforestation efforts of 1T.org"; it said Salesforce had funded more than 40 million trees toward its 100 million tree goal. American Forests wrote on 4 October 2021 that more than 70 members of the US chapter, the first chapter of the platform, had pledged over 50 billion trees worldwide.
The 1t.org legacy page, now hosted by the Forest Future Alliance (a World Economic Forum initiative), lists 93 companies that pledged 9.7 billion equivalent trees across 143 countries and government commitments of more than 75 billion trees, including from China and India, and chapters in nine regions. The page reports pledged figures only and gives no planted, restored or verified count. The Forest Future Alliance says it is building on 1t.org's six years of progress; the US chapter became Forests Plus.
A Bloomberg analysis of May 2024, as summarised by REDD-Monitor, reported 134.4 billion trees pledged to 1t.org and 2.6 billion planted or conserved on a partial count by the World Economic Forum and American Forests. Bloomberg wrote that the total pledged "amounts to less than 15% of 1 trillion" and that "it's impossible to know how many trees the project has actually planted or saved so far"; a Forum spokesperson said the process relies "on transparency and reporting by the companies themselves". The sources reviewed contain no independent measurement of trees planted, surviving or conserved under 1t.org.
