xAI Colossus gas turbines (Memphis, Southaven)
xAI runs gas turbines to power data-centre sites in Memphis, Tennessee, and Southaven, Mississippi. In April 2026 the NAACP sued the company in federal court over 27 turbines at Southaven, alleging unlawful operation.
Allegation as reported by WTOK on 14 April 2026; not adjudicated.
Status As of May 2026: NAACP federal suit over Southaven turbines pending (reported 14 April 2026); Anthropic leased Colossus 1; no ruling or penalty found.

What happened
xAI, the artificial-intelligence company, operates the Colossus data-centre complex in Memphis, Tennessee, and gas turbines for on-site power at sites in Memphis and Southaven, Mississippi. A satellite analysis published by Cleanview in May 2026 counted 12 turbines remaining at Colossus 1, down from a peak of 35. The same analysis reported that Colossus 2 was not connected to the grid and generated about 1.3 GW from about 59 mobile turbines.
On 14 April 2026 WTOK reported that the NAACP had sued xAI in federal court over 27 turbines at Southaven that it alleged were operating unlawfully. The report said the facility could be the largest source of nitrogen oxides (NOx) in the Memphis metropolitan area.
On 6 May 2026 E&E News reported that Anthropic had leased all of the capacity of Colossus 1, which it described as more than 300 MW and more than 220,000 GPUs. The report said the facility had been criticised for operating turbines without permits and for cooling with drinking water. The lease price could not be verified.
Environmental disclosure by AI companies is limited. Stanford's Foundation Model Transparency Index (December 2025) listed ten companies, including OpenAI, Google and Anthropic, as not disclosing environmental data; xAI scored 14 out of 100 on the index. Earth911 reported in March 2026 that Anthropic had not published Scope 1–3 emissions.
On 5 March 2026 Amazon, Google, Meta, Microsoft, OpenAI, Oracle and xAI signed a White House pledge to protect household electricity customers, according to W.Media. The pledge is voluntary and has no monitoring mechanism; Anthropic was not on the list of signatories.

What we don't know
Nature
- Not measured Harm to nature: The record holds no measurement of harm to nature.
Record
- Insufficient Reported but not independently verified: a TechCrunch article of 18 June 2025 was headlined that xAI faced a lawsuit over operating more than 400 MW of gas turbines without permits. The evidence file also lists up to 35 turbines counted at Memphis against 15 permitted, operation without permits for about a year, permits for 15 turbines in July 2025, and a local agency treating the turbines as “nonroad engines”.
- None on record The price Anthropic pays for the Colossus 1 lease could not be verified.
- None on record No emissions or water-use figures for the Colossus turbines or for Anthropic's leased capacity were found in the record, so the burden on nearby communities cannot be measured from it.
- None on record No fine or penalty against xAI is recorded.
- None on record The signatory list of the White House pledge is dated March 2026 and may have changed since.
Did the harm stop?
Not established. Satellite analysis in May 2026 counted fewer turbines at Colossus 1 than at its peak, and about 59 mobile turbines at Colossus 2; the NAACP suit over Southaven was pending.
Who paid?
Not established. The sources name residents of Boxtown (Memphis) and Southaven as the nearby communities; no measured burden is recorded.
