What happened

The record, in order.

Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) were the subject of a claim brought by residents of Anniston, Alabama against Monsanto. CNN Money reported in 2002 that the Anniston case settled for US$700 million and covered more than 20,000 residents.

A separate record, a filing by Solutia cited in the sources reviewed, describes a US$550 million cash payment in a 2003 Anniston settlement, to which Monsanto's insurers contributed. The sources reviewed do not reconcile the two dates and the two figures.

In June 2020 Bayer announced agreements to resolve major legacy Monsanto litigation. Its announcement listed up to US$10.9 billion for Roundup cancer claims, up to US$400 million for dicamba drift claims and about US$820 million for PCB water claims, and said the agreements were made with no admission of liability. Bloomberg Law reported the PCB part as US$650 million with cities and ports and US$170 million with three states.

In early December 2025 Bayer filed suit against AIG in St. Louis County, Missouri. The complaint concerns excess insurance policies running from June 1967 to April 1986. Bayer said it faced more than US$1.9 billion in PCB settlements by the end of 2024 and more than US$10 billion in Roundup settlements, and that it had sent payment demands in July 2024 (Roundup) and October 2024 (PCBs). The News Tribune reported that the insurer's grounds were not public and that the case was pending.
