What happened

The record, in order.

The Rigel, a cargo ship owned by Mayfair Shipping Ltd (Valletta), sailed from Marina di Carrara declaring a cargo of marble granulate, blocks and tiles for Limassol. On 21 September 1987 it sank about 20 nautical miles south-east of Capo Spartivento, Calabria, without sending a distress call. A Yugoslav ship carried the crew to Tunis.

A final judgment of the La Spezia court accepted that the sinking was deliberate and an insurance fraud. The charges included criminal association and fraud against the insurer. A 2009 article in L'Unità said the owner was convicted of fraud against the insurance (the Lloyd's of London).

Reggio Calabria prosecutors investigated a suspicion that the ship carried toxic or radioactive waste. That inquiry was closed because the wreck was never found. The La Spezia trial did not establish the real cargo, and waste was never charged.
