What happened

The record, in order.

A team led by Christoph Lübbert reported in 2017 that Hyderabad sewage contained fluconazole at up to 236,950 micrograms per litre, and that more than 95 per cent of samples held carbapenemase-producing bacteria, according to Chemistry World.

In 2020 India's environment ministry published a draft with discharge limits for 121 antibiotics. The final rule of 2021 contained no antibiotic limits. AMR Insights reported that the industry association had asked for limits to be targets rather than binding standards.

A 2026 antimicrobial resistance benchmark found that all companies reporting compliance measured it in the receiving water after dilution, and that none of 17 companies measured at the pipe.

  3. 2021Final rule without antibiotic limits (reported August 2021)

Recorded

  • Hyderabad sewage contained fluconazole at up to 236,950 ug/L; more than 95 per cent of samples contained carbapenemase-producing bacteria.
  • The 2020 draft set limits for 121 antibiotics; the 2021 final rule set none.
  • None of 17 companies measured discharge at the pipe, as the WHO recommends; compliance was measured in the receiving water after dilution.
