What happened
Odesa Regional Governor Oleh Kiper said (Kyiv Post, 25 December 2025) that Russian strikes had damaged sunflower-oil storage tanks at the port of Pivdennyi. A strike hit the port facilities on 20 December 2025 and the spill was detected on 24 December. Kiper said that “All specialized services were immediately deployed once the pollution was detected”, that the Pivdennyi channel was sealed with double boom barriers and that continuous shelling for the first two days limited the cleanup. The Ukrainian Sea Ports Administration said the substance was “vegetable oil, which is an organic substance subject to natural biological decomposition”.
Viktor Dovhan, a former deputy infrastructure minister, told Novaya Gazeta Europe that a batch of 40–50 thousand tonnes of vegetable oil burned in strikes on Pivdennyi and Chornomorsk on 30 December 2025, and that Allseeds tanks at Pivdennyi and a Kernel oil plant at Chornomorsk were hit.
On 26 April 2026 a storage tank containing 6,000 tonnes of sunflower oil was destroyed at Chornomorsk, according to the State Environmental Inspectorate's South-Western District (Ukrinform, 27 April 2026). The Inspectorate said “A slick approximately 400 by 200 meters has formed on the surface of the water”; booms were deployed, stormwater drains blocked and samples taken.
Ivan Rusev of Tuzly Lagoons National Nature Park said on 2 January 2026: “According to our estimates, more than 1,000 birds of various species died in the Odesa Bay, mainly pirnikoz” (grebes). Pollution was found about 150 km from the site, and oil patches of up to 5,000 m² were seen at an inspection on 27 January. In June 2026 the Inspectorate's South-Western District put damage to the Odesa region's marine environment at more than UAH 23 billion, naming vegetable oil from destroyed port facilities as the most common pollutant; there is no per-incident breakdown.
- 2025Strike on Pivdennyi port facilities (20 Dec); spill detected (24 Dec); Kyiv Post report (25 Dec); strikes on Pivdennyi and Chornomorsk, according to Dovhan (30 Dec)
- 2026Rusev's estimate of over 1,000 dead birds (2 Jan); oil patches inspected (27 Jan); Chornomorsk tank with 6,000 t of sunflower oil destroyed (26 Apr); regional marine damage above UAH 23 billion (16 Jun)
