What happened

The record, in order.

The North Aral Sea, the Kazakh part of the Aral Sea, was the subject of a restoration scheme built around the Kokaral dam. The sources reviewed describe the dam as a large engineering work used for repair rather than extraction.

A March 2026 report in the Kazakh outlet Bizmedia, citing the ministry, gave the area of the North Aral Sea as 36% larger and its salinity as halved after the dam.

Two further figures appear without a link to a primary document: the fish catch in the North Aral rose from 695 tonnes to thousands of tonnes after the dam, and the catch quota was about six times higher in the period 2018–2026.

The sources reviewed record no lawsuit, no insurance claim and no named dispute about the dam.
