What happened

The record, in order.

The East Biga projects in the Kaz Dağları area of Çanakkale, including Kirazlı, belonged to the Canadian company Alamos Gold from 2018. The operating licence expired on 13 October 2019 and was not extended; the forest permit was rejected in October 2020. Türkiye did not renew the mining licence in 2019.

Trees were felled at Kirazlı. The figures differ by source: 13,400 (General Directorate of Forestry, OGM), 45,650 (environmental impact assessment, ÇED), 195,000 (TEMA) and 347,815 (Turkish Foresters' Association). A counting convention noted in the sources is that trees under 8 cm in diameter are not counted. A protest vigil, the 'Water and Conscience Vigil', began in July 2019; the Atikhisar Dam lies 14 km from the site.

In April 2021 Alamos claimed USD 1 billion in international arbitration over the halted project, and said its investment exceeded USD 250 million. The company's chief executive said Alamos had paid about USD 5 million for forest permits and described the protests as a political attack.

On 14 September 2025 Alamos announced the sale of its Turkish projects (Kirazlı, Ağı Dağı and Çamyurt) to Tümad, a subsidiary of Nurol Holding, for USD 470 million. The arbitration was reported as suspended, to lapse when certain stages of the sale are completed; the terms were reported as confidential.

In April 2026 Tümad's work machinery was reported on the site, and opponents said no new environmental impact assessment decision had been issued. In July 2026 the Kirazlı Solidarity Network was formed and the vigil continued.
