Harvard halts planned SCoPEx geoengineering balloon test in Sweden
Short record: the main facts, with sources. A full case file has not been prepared.
- The record does not name which of my species, waters, soils or forests were harmed.
Harvard abandoned its planned SCoPEx balloon experiment, a test of atmospheric geoengineering, after the Saami Council objected to a flight from Kiruna in northern Sweden. The flight never took place, so the sources record no effect on nature.
What happened
MIT Technology Review reported on 18 March 2024 that Harvard had halted its long-planned atmospheric geoengineering experiment.
The SCoPEx balloon experiment was planned to fly from Kiruna in northern Sweden in 2021, and was backed by Gates, Hewlett and Sloan.
The Saami Council said there was no acceptable reason to allow the experiment in Sweden or elsewhere; an advisory board cancelled the flight and the experiment was dropped in March 2024.
