What happened

The record, in order.

The Ikarian Reefer, a refrigerated cargo ship ("reefer"), ran aground off Sierra Leone in 1985. A fire broke out afterwards.

The underwriters, led in the record by Prudential, alleged that the fire had been started with the connivance of the ship's owners and refused to pay a claim of about US$3 million.

The owners sued. The Commercial Court found for the owners ([1993] 2 Lloyd's Rep 68). The Court of Appeal reversed that decision and found that the fire had been deliberate, in National Justice Compania Naviera v Prudential ([1995] 1 Lloyd's Rep 455).

The research record notes no environmental consequence for this incident: it states the environmental consequence as not documented.
